Multi-tasking: the future for hospital cleaning equipment?

While the focus of attention for hospital cleaning has naturally centred of late on dealing with MRSA, it is not hard to imagine that many hospitals or contract cleaning companies are perhaps a little cash-strapped when it comes to the lesser priority of general cleaning of the facility.

Yes, we know that cleaning is cleaning and that every little helps, but is cleaning that lift, stairwell, or entrance doorway, for example, really going to make much difference in the fight against hospital-acquired infection?

With recent surveys indicating that not only are ambulances infected, thus potentially bringing in infection with each new patient, and that many visitors and some patient healthcare workers are also carrying MRSA on their skin and clothing, the answer to the question can only be that, yes, every cleaning action must have a positive effect, if we are to finally eradicate this deadly infection from our hospitals.

But surely this is where budgetary constraints come into play? If cleaning equipment is not necessarily specific to MRSA, is it then a luxury that must wait?

The solution to the dilemma must be to use cleaning equipment that is not only sure to destroy MRSA bacteria wherever it is deployed, but a type that will also improve overall cleanliness and appearance throughout the facility as well.

Steam cleaning in hospitals is currently making a great deal of progress and is viewed as one of the ‘cutting edge’ approaches in preventing HAI.

Little wonder, when laboratory evaluations using steam cleaning machines have established the rapid destruction of hospital infection strains in less than two seconds. Field trials and practical experience have also supported these findings.

Effective, because the system relies not upon chemicals - which can take up to 30 minutes to achieve a satisfactory bacteria kill efficacy - but instead upon the physical action of steam heated to between 150 to 180 Celsius to instantly destroy the water-based protective biome that the bacteria must inhabit in order to survive and grow.

Cleans any surface

Versatile, because unlike taskspecific cleaning equipment such as floor scrubber-driers that can only clean... well, floors, steam cleaning machines can clean just about any surface imaginable whether hard, soft, or porous.

Steam penetrates and evaporates, so that any hospital equipment needing to be sanitised does not have to be dismantled. This aspect has major benefits where even bed frames, mattress covers and curtains may be cleaned in situ so that beds may be returned to full use in the fastest time possible.

Many hospitals are now using machines from the OspreyDeepclean range to sanitise patient trolleys, wheelchairs, bedside curtains, A&E areas, and also for general ward and facility cleaning.

OspreyDeepclean has assembled a unique collection of specially selected machines to provide a high performance, practical and cost-effective solution to satisfy every cleaning task imaginable within the healthcare sector.

The market-proven Robby 6000, together with the newer Robby Pro and Evolution machines are steam-only, stainless steel bodied machines that offer a budget priced yet robust steam cleaning application wherever it is most needed.

The Steam ‘n’ Vac and Steam & Vac Pro housekeeping models are the ideal solutions to routine ward cleaning, combining efficient steam cleaning with a built-in vacuum that is filtered through water to ensure absolute air filtration at the molecular level. These machines may be used not only on beds, mattresses, pillows, and bedside curtains, but more beneficially where patients with respiratory problems are located. The water filtration ensures that it is not possible for dust mites, pollen, or other allergens to be exhausted back into the air. And because the dust is safely retained in the water compartment, emptying of these machines also becomes completely non-hazardous.

For ward deep cleaning, large floor areas, corridors, and for kitchen and catering areas, the new and more powerful Revolution, the Deepclean 3000 Vac, and the Vega Plus, are the machines of choice.

In addition, should chewing gum deposits or graffiti also be frequently occurring problems within the hospital precinct, there are also versions of the OspreyDeepclean equipment with chemical injection. Using specially formulated environmentally friendly chemicals, this feature enables rapid delamination of gum and paints from floor and wall surfaces and thus immediately and significantly raises the general appearance of the hospital.
